Mr. Chase Participation In Government / Economics 2013-14
This 12th grade social studies course is divided into half-year classes. The first semester class is called
Participation in Government
which surveys the origin, structure and operation of our federal government, the state government of New York, and local government. The course focuses on Social Studies Learning Standard 5: Civics, Citizenship and Government. Topics to be covered include the Constitution, Bill of Rights, the Congress, the Presidency, the Court, elections and political campaigns, community service, civic discourse and participation through collaborative and interactive communication technologies. Civic education must provide students with a foundation of core knowledge in democracy and federalism while exposing them to current issues and events. It is the goal of this course to enable students to become active participants in the political process, even prior to reaching voting age. Students must develop the capacity to make judgments, form reasoned opinions, and propose appropriate civic actions and public policy to address economic, environmental, political and social concerns. The result of this course is effective and enthusiastic participation in government at the local, state, and national levels. The best citizen is an informed citizen.
During the second semester we study and learn about
. The study of economics is intended to provide students with necessary knowledge and skills to function as productive and financially literate citizens. This section of the course focuses on Social Studies Learning Standard 4: Economics. The purpose of this course is to lay a foundation of information that students can build upon during the school year and after graduation as they learn to successfully manage their finances as students and employees. Economics curriculum will focus on the areas of business and personal finance. The course begins with an introduction to basic economic concepts, principles and terms. A variety of current events and economic related public policy issues will also be studied including; natural gas drilling, costs of college, inflation, unemployment, health care, the housing market, trade deficit, tax system, and social security. We will also be studying economics and finance on an individual and personal level learning about a variety of topics including; different types of loans and financing, credit cards, budgeting, personal debt, credit scores, and debit cards. This course will challenge students to think critically and rationally, while engaging them in activities emphasizing consumer choice, responsibility and effective decision making skills.
Both sections of this course will incorporate the New York State Social Studies Skills: Getting Information, Using Information, Presenting Information and Participating in Interpersonal and Group Relations. The
Common Core State Standards
for ELA and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects also provide a framework for this class with an emphasis on College and Career Readiness Anchor Standard #7 for reading and #6 for writing.
There is no textbook for Participation In Government class. We will be using
Economics Principles & Practices
for Economics class. The teachings and philosophy of Dale Carnegie will serve as a framework for both courses. Supplemental articles, readings and documents will be downloaded from the following web sites...

Course Assessment and Grading:
There will be a variety of research andwriting activities requiring students to analyze, and evaluate documents and data retrieved from the web sites listed above. Students will complete and present team writing and media projects. Additional assessments will consist of short answer and extended response questions along with current event article summaries. Each student will also be required to complete a service learning component and write a reflective paper on the experience. During September students will also take the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) citizenship test which is administered to all immigrants applying for citizenship. This will not be a graded activity but used as a course Pre-test and Post-Test to help instructor adjust and modify the Participation In Government course curriculum and design depending on a particular group of students prior knowledge.
